    • S. 275: „Another and very important addition to Rilke literature in English is K. G. Knight´s translation of the most penetrating analysis of Rilke´s Duino Elegies by Romano Guardini which appeared in 1953 under the title: Rainer Maria Rilkes Deutung des Daseins. Eine Interpretation der Duineser Elegien. It is not the place here to review Guardini´s book but to express gratitude to the translator for achieving the task of translating this, in parts very difficult, book so well. In order to make the translation more readable certain liberties have occasionally been taken in leaving out or streamlining parts of the original sentences, e.g. the phrase in brackets on p. 39 in Guardini's book - 'das Erlebnis von ihr, die Entbehrung als lebendige Realität' - which is a very important one in the context has been completely left out in the translation (p. 26); Guardini's 'Sühne der ersten Schuld' (p. 419) has been translated merely as 'atonement' (p. 302); 'Neuzeit' has for Guardini and for those who know his work Das Ende der Neuzeit a more definite content than Knight's translation 'modern times'. But these are small blemishes. Knight's translation is a 'must' for all Australasian university libraries.“
