  • "One place to start is the Catholic ressourcement, a theological movement that returned to the sources in order to better navigate modernity. The ressourcement movement of the mid-twentieth century sought to recover the dynamism of tradition and bring it into conversation with the modern world. While some used the return as a mere refuge from modernity, Romano Guardini confronted the changing reality head on. The German theologian’s End of the Modern World provided a prophetic response to the increasing power that man had acquired over nature. Guardini argued that the new age of scientific and technological power, minus an ethic of humility and responsibility, was becoming increasingly hostile to both nature and humanity. Guardini saw what was coming, in part, because he looked backward in order to look ahead. Guardini drew deeply from history, philosophy, and theology, showing the way in which humanity’s increasing sense of dislocation in the universe resulted from the displacement of God. His narrative continues to resonate today as the Holy Father’s encyclical Laudato Si has given Guardini another prominent hearing. In particular, Chapter 3 of the pope’s document, “The Human Roots of the Ecological Crisis,” retrieves Guardini’s caution against the blind pursuit of power, profit, and efficiency that has come at great human, spiritual, and environmental cost."

Il pulsare della realtà non dipende dall'opposizione di contraddizione, ma da quella di contrarietà in cui gli opposti sono complementari e reali, non lottano a morte l'uno contro l'altro ma ma mostrano la loro necessità nel processo concreto del divenire. L'opposizione tra termini (bianco-nero, alto-basso, padre-figlio, bene-male) non implica di per sé contraddizione, neanche nella forma dell'unità dialettica degli opposti, che invece è contraddittoria solo quando i due opposti sono identificati (identità degli opposti). Là dove l´unità degli opposti è intensa nella forma per cui l´essenza di un oggetto sta nella relazione con il suo opposto, allora l´oggetto è se stesso in quanto totalmente relazionato al suo opposto. Refuting the Hegelian Dialectic, which envisaged reality structured by the dialectic between thesis, antithesis, and synthesis, Guardini believed that reality was the product of an unresolved and constant tension between two opposite poles: `The peculiar relationship in which two moments exclude each other and yet connect with each other, this relationship that appears in every quantitative, qualitative and formative determination, I call opposition´ (Guardini 1997, 29). Then, Guardini clarified that the opposition „is not a “synthesis” of two moments in a third. And not even a whole in which the two represent the “parts”. Even less mixing in view of some compromise. On the contrary, it is a question of an original relationship, in all and for all particular, of an original phenomeon.   • Englische Zusammenfassung: The authors of the article have tried to present the experience of the closeness of death in Guardini’s interpretation of Plato’s dialogues between Socrates and his devoted disciples who could not accept the decision of their master and friend. Guardini’s interpretations were written as a philosophical analysis of the state of Socrates' mind, it is not a psychological analysis of his emotions or emotional states. Guardini wishes to reveal how Socrates faces the mystery of death as a philosopher. The authors focused on the dialogues between Socrates and his disciples and how Plato as his disciple and chronicler describes his conflict with oneself and and the mentality of his followers on the mythological, political and philosophical meaning of death. ...“
